Well done to the U14 hurling team who beat Benildus college by 1 point in a friendly match yesterday 2-8 to 3-4.  The boys league begins on the 12 February against Templeogue College.

Hard luck to the 2nd yr girls basketball team who lost to Loreto Crumlin in their 3rd match yesterday.

Hard luck to our U19 boys basketball team who lost the All Ireland final 47-59.

After a very tough 1st quarter the St Colmcilles boys were always on the back foot. They fought hard and gave it their all to come back into the match. Mark Dolan was top scorer on the day with 26 points.

The boys still have the league play offs to look forward to.

Match report from www.basketballireland.ie is below

St Colmcilles, Knocklyon 47 (15) - (M Dolan 26, D McDonald 8, B Kildruff 4)
Patrician HS, Carrickmacross 59 (29) - (S Marron 21, S O’ Hanlon 16, A Connolly 6)
MVP – Stephen O’Hanlon (Patrician HS, Carrickmacross)
A first quarter rampage by Sean Marron and Stephen O’ Hanlon paved the way for an easy victory for Patrician HS of Carrickmacross over St Colmcilles of Knocklyon who they defeated 47-59 to win the U19 B Boys All Ireland Cup.
Marron and Hanlon scored a combined 21 out of 23 points in the first quarter to leave their opponents visibly shaken and in complete shock when Patrician HS struck without mercy from the get go.
It only took Patrician HS five seconds to strike first when Marron easily dribbled past St Colmcilles’ Stephen Ward and Darragh Egan and converted a dipping 3 point shot. Marron and Hanlon inflicted further damage when they combined to score 5 unanswered baskets before Mark Dolan was finally able to put St Colmcilles on the board.
St Colmcilles only began to find their feet at the very end of the first quarter but by then it was too little to late as the damage had been done and they were left already trailing by a deficit of 18 points.
Patrician HS failed to capitalise on how stunned they had left their opponents by their first quarter performance in the second quarter as they managed to only convert 6 points in comparison to St Colmcilles’ 10. In a complete reversal of his performance in the first quarter, O’ Hanlon repeatedly gave away a number of fouls and free throws all of which St Colmcilles were only too happy to convert in order to reduce the deficit. However, this still left them trailing their opponents by 14 points at halftime.
Just as it looked like Patrician HS were thinking along the lines of a repeat of their performance from the first quarter, Mark Dolan strong armed his way past Adrian Connolly to score an inside lay up in an attempt and get his team back into the game. Unfortunately for Dolan it didn’t quite have the effect he was looking for as Patrician HS proceeded to increase their lead thanks to 7 third quarter points each from both Marron and O’ Hanlon. O’ Hanlon’s performance saw him end as the MVP of the game having scored 16 points.
A couple of neatly converted free throws from Dolan and Brian Kilduff, and a baskets for Thomas O’ Mahoney and Stephen Ward in the fourth quarter allowed St Colmcilles to finish the game on a floury of momentum but in the end the deficit was too great for them to overcome and Patrician HS of Carrickmacross left with the commanding victory and as winners of the U19 B Boys All Ireland Cup.

BT Young Scientist News

The School was represented this year by two second year students, Ben Nolan and Fionnuala Connelly. Their entrepreneurial technology project was titled “Mediavista - Smartphone controlled TV Media Centre”. This project was developed with the assistance of their teachers Dr Tom Foyle and Dr Des Murphy. The technology allowed the conversion of a standard TV into a smart TV allowing internet access to sites such a YouTube and the play back of music and film on a standard TV. This all can be controlled from the comfort of the couch using any smartphone which acts as a remote control. The project generated great interest and they received several orders to purchase the device at the exhibition from attendees. Their picture and project also featured in the Irish Times in an article entitled “Smart, Easy-to-Market Product puts Technology Centre Stage at the RDS” on Friday 10th January. It also drew high profile interest from the Chief Technology Officer of RTE, Richard Waghorn who was interested in its potential to be integrated with RTE’s Saorview service. The project also drew the attention of the Labour Tánaiste Eamon Gilmore and the CEO of the BT Ireland Colm O'Neill. Overall the project received an excellent “Highly Commended” award in recognition of the calibre of the work achieved by these young scientists.
