1st Yrs Win All Ireland Basketball Title

On Thurs 7th May, the first year boys of St Colmcille’s Community School played in the All Ireland final against Pobalscoil Corca Dhuibhne. The day was certainly one to remember, with support of over 250 from our school.
Before the match our lads acknowledged the support, sending shivers down the backs of our opponents and giving us a huge psychological advantage. It was a perfect welcome for Pobalscoil Corca Dhuibhne as they warmed up. It has to be said, the Knocklyon roar was to prove a significant factor in the outcome of this match.
We rushed out of the blocks denying the Kerrymen but 2 points in the first half alone. With the score at 23-6 with only one quarter left, I told my players, all they trained for all season was only a few minutes away, as long as focus was maintained. The final score was 32-10, capped by a fine 3 pointer by captain Stephen Ward 2 seconds from time. As Pobalscoil Corca Dhuibhne inbounded the ball after this, the sound from our fans was deafening. We had finally captured an All Ireland title in basketball.
I would like to thank our captain, Stephen Ward and all players involved. My backroom staff from Transition Year be it water carriers, photographers or supervisors at tables- you're help is hugely appreciated. A special word of gratitude must also go out to parents who travelled over Ireland to support the team. Last but not least our fans have to be thanked as it was the atmosphere they created that made our All Ireland win all the more memorable. This day will surely live long in each and every one of our memories.
